Annual Writing Competition
Please join us in our celebration of Black History Month by participating in our 2nd annual writing competition. There will be two separate contests, one for area high school students (including Madison Central, Madison Southern, Berea Community, and Model Laboratory) and one for Eastern Kentucky University students.
Eligibility and Guidelines:
- All individuals who wish to participate in writing competition must be enrolled in an area high school (Madison Southern, Madison Central, Berea Community, and Model Laboratory) or Eastern Kentucky University.
- The submitted piece of work must be written about some aspect of the black experience anywhere throughout the U.S., Africa, Europe, Caribbean, etc.
- The submitted piece could be in the form of poetry, short story, personal essay or an academic essay.
- The submitted piece of work must be composed solely by the student who is requesting to participate in the contest.
- All submissions must be accompanied by the student information sheet in order to be judged. Student Information sheet (PDF file) is available through the AFA website: www.africanamericanstudies.eku.edu or the AFA Office (Keith 121).
- All submissions must be made by 4:30 p.m. on February 15, 2010.
- Winners will be notified by March 15, 2010 through e-mail.
- Winners are expected to read their winning entries during the African/African-American Studies Student Showcase and Recognition ceremony on April 13, 2010.
- Writing submissions will be judged on style and content by a committee of three EKU professors.
- Decisions made by the committee of judges are final.
- Prize for High School Winning Entry = $100
- Prize for EKU Student Winning Entry = $100 scholarship
