Proposal to add elective course in the AFA Minor/Certificate Program

To: AFA Studies Advisory Board

Name:
Department:
E-Mail:

I would like to submit the following course for consideration as an elective in the AFA Minor/Certificate:

Course Prefix:

Course Title:

Semester Offered:

A course can be proposed solely as a new AFA prefix course or as a course to be cross-listed with an already existing course in the faculty member's department. Please indicate the statement which most applies to the course you are proposing:

  1. This course already exists in the curriculum and has passed criteria used by the appropriate Eastern Kentucky University Curriculum Committees.
    Yes      No
  2. The course is new and is being proposed as an AFA prefix course.
    Yes      No
  3. If the course is being proposed as a new AFA prefix course, do you plan to propose an equivalent course in your department that will be cross-listed with the AFA course.
    Yes      No
  4. If you answered "yes" to question #3 above, what would be the number of the proposed cross-listed course in your department.

The proposed course must meet the following stated AFA educational goals and objectives:

Criterion 1: A primary focus of the course must clearly be on the roles, contributions, and/or experiences of peoples of African descent in Africa and/or the Diaspora. Please explain how your course meets this goal.

Criterion 2: The course must enable students to identify and analyze race and identity-based assumptions and biases and to recognize their consequences on individual, social, and cultural levels. Explain specifically how your course does this.

Criterion 3: Course content must reflect established as well as recent scholarship on African, African-American and/or Caribbean Studies. Explain specifically how your course does this, as exemplified in a detailed course description.

Criterion 4: In keeping with effective classroom pedagogy, the instructor should use teaching techniques which encourage written and oral communication, teacher-student and a student-student collaboration, active learning, and real world involvement. Explain specifically how this is accomplished in your course.

In addition to the information given above, please add any other information which will assist the committee in reviewing your proposal.

Please press the send button to submit your proposal. Please be sure to mail a sample syllabus to Dr. Salome Nnoromele (Keith Building, Room 125) or e-mail it to salome.nnoromele@eku.edu.
